Best advice is what you just read. I've let inertia keep me near a standstill as far as indie film goes. My bad. But I continue to watch others sally forth in spite of obstacles. We should too. The main thing is to remember to get that thing on a screen in front of an audience. By FAR the best education/practice of your craft you can get. You WILL be much better for it.
