Creating a Great Demo Reel

Most of my DayJobVu business comes from word of mouth, but as things get tighter in the economy, we all have to reach out farther for new clients.  In order to be successful, you need a good demo reel.

I haven’t cut many demo reels before, but I’ve been an editor ten years, so it didn’t seem impossible to learn.  So I spent a few days researching great demo reels, reading up on tips, and somewhere in there, it clicked.  48 hours later, I had this.

I sent that out to ten potential clients this morning at 5am.  Today, at 2PM, I already have one contract offer and one request for more information.

So what is a good demo reel?

Hard Drives Aren’t Forever

Read a very disturbing article at LarryJordan.biz, courtesy of The Editblog:

Magnetic signals recorded on a hard disk are designed to be refreshed periodically. If your hard disks stay on, this happens automatically. However, if you store your projects to a removable hard drive, then store that hard drive on a shelf, unattached to a computer, those magnetic signals will fade over time… essentially, evaporating.

Emphasis is mine.  Read his whole article here.

If you are doing any kind of editing with external HDs (I currently have more than 4TBs worth), the article is worth the read.

Then go back and pay a visit to all those HDs.
